The purpose of this two-year Fellowship in Health Information and Clinical Outcomes is to train pharmacists in the areas of health information management solutions, health-system corporate administrative management, and associated clinical outcomes. This unique fellowship position partners with a health system, allowing the fellow to obtain experience with health system corporate pharmacy administration at a large integrated health delivery network. The fellow will also gain industry-related experience in health information technology (HIT) with clinical services, medical content development, marketing, sales, client support, and clinically relevant solutions to meet the growing challenges in healthcare.
Seventy-five percent of the fellow’s time will be spent in research and performance improvement endeavors. Opportunities are available to conduct pharmacoeconomic and health outcomes research at a health system level, work with corporate leaders on projects, including (but not limited to) antimicrobial stewardship, quality and performance improvement, formulary management, and medication safety strategy. The fellowship training program will focus on several key clinical areas including medication management, antimicrobial stewardship, healthcare quality, and infection prevention.
The fellow will be responsible for working with a principal mentor in designing and conducting a research project to completion, presenting research at professional meetings, core membership on strategic committees (e.g. Medication Safety), and submitting a manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal. In addition, the fellow may obtain a teaching certificate and gain teaching experience as a preceptor of APPE students and present formal presentations in a lecture environment at a university.
Research Experience: • Participation and completion of an accredited research training certificate program from ACCP Research Institute • Design and conduct research studies related to clinical technology solutions, population health, and clinical best practice • Training in statistical analysis of data • Grantsmanship, including identification of appropriate funding sources for specific projects and the preparation and submission of a grant for extramural funding consideration • Development of clinical, laboratory, and/or computer-based research skills as appropriate to the specific training program • Abstract preparation and submission • Presentation of research at peer-reviewed scientific meetings • Manuscript preparation and submission for publication in peer-reviewed journals • Participation in journal clubs, research workshops, and/or seminar series • Instruction in biomedical science ethics
Technology Experience: • Explain healthcare regulations, standards, and goals associated with patient quality and safety, and pharmacy operations • Illustrate the organizational structure and culture of the fellowship sponsoring organizations • Develop, implement, monitor, and report on a clinical initiative and an operations initiative for the partnering health system • Describe the health system antimicrobial stewardship strategy • Evaluate drug literature in an effort to make clinical conclusions based on evidence-based medicine • Assess health system utilization of the clinical decision support software and identify areas of opportunity • Maintain and update content related to clinical technology solutions • Explain pragmatic marketing and develop clinical white papers • Describe Agile methodology and the Scrum process for software development • Lead product demonstrations and conduct clinical return on investment (ROI) • Fulfill the requirements to obtain a teaching certificate • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities essential to operate effectively within the health system and advance the profession of pharmacy
Interested candidates must have completed a Doctor of Pharmacy Program from an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy and must be eligible to work in the United States. The candidate must be eligible to sit for the NAPLEX exam prior to starting the fellowship. Completion of a PGY1 and/or PGY2 Pharmacy Residency is preferred.
