Medical Writer – the role
The Medical Writer, Medical Affairs (Health Plans) is responsible for developing high-quality materials that address evidence submissions to payers, laboratory testing technology, test selection, and test result interpretation; and for participating in the communication of our global health economics (GHE) strategy. This professional may write or edit scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The Medical Writer reports to Director, Global Scientific Publications and Education; additional reporting to the Senior Director, Medical Affairs. This is a hands-on writing role.
Researches, selects, and synthesizes relevant scientific and medical information to be included in evidence submissions to payers, as well as in educational materials targeted toward physician and patient audiences
Writes and edits reports for regulatory submissions on health-related issues in the areas of health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), epidemiology, and health policy; manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations (poster and oral presentation); and educational materials related to diagnostic test offerings (test summaries, clinical focuses, etc.)
Provides strategic counsel on communications best practices, including effective advocacy for optimal tone, voice, length, and medium
Reviews, critiques, and revises written summaries of analytical work done by other team members
Acts as a resource to help colleagues improve their writing and data presentation skills in the development of tables, graphs, and other materials
Oversees formatting and production of written materials
Performs cross-functional training
Performs other functions as needed
To qualify, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
Master’s degree or PhD in a medical or scientific discipline (especially quantitative fields such as health economics, biostatistics, and epidemiology) with 1 or more years of medical or health economics writing experience; Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years of medical writing experience may be acceptable.
Strong communication skills (written and oral) required.
Minor in English communications, composition, or journalism is a strong plus. Clinical laboratory experience is beneficial.
Health economics and third-party payer experience preferred; including knowledge of evidence assessment by payers and coverage policy development.
Proficiency in medical and scientific information retrieval.
Ability to quickly grasp the objective of a study, understand the targeted messaging, and evaluate the quality of evidence.
Understanding of the major issues studied in a HEOR project and ability to critically evaluate the findings of a project and apply them to the diagnostic space.
Ability to work smoothly as an integrated component of various case teams while managing multiple projects. Intermediate level computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and EndNote.
